Part Su-15 TM detail set
for the Trumpeter 1/48th scale model kit
reviewed by Steve Jantscher
Detail set summary
I first heard of Part in the aircraft side of their photo etch business from my 1/72nd scale WWI aircraft builder buddies. They talked about the quality, comprehensive nature, value and thinness of Part's photo etch product. Now that more and more of Part's new releases are coming out in "my scale of choice" I'm also starting to appreciate their quality.
The Trumpeter Su-15 TM is the late model, cranked wing single seat interceptor, and the subject of this review is the part set for this kit. General reviews, as well as my personal observations of my copy of this kit agree to it's strengths and weaknesses. The nose needs fixing either with a saw, or Loon Model's resin replacement nose cone, and the cockpit leaves room for improvement. This set is intended to address one of those specific criticisms, as well as provide many more of those little bits that add up to make an above average model.
A good quarter of the PE set is devoted to dressing up the cockpit and ejection seat. A relief instrument panel with film backing, as well as side consoles and throttle quadrants are also included. A full belt / harness is provided for the bare kit ejection seat, as well as extra little bits.
There are many external fittings and gates included as well as engine afterburner can details. The engine faces are literally separate blades attached to the hub. Many flying control hinges and struts are included in meticulous detail (often seeming like overkill). The landing gear get attended to also, as does the funky Pitt tube with it's many vanes. The speed brakes and canopy get internal detail too. Finally, the missiles get some of their fins replaced by nicely in scale PE pieces.
