This is a rather strange bird, the He-59, and only recently kitted, this time by Special Hobby. According to William Green's Warplanes of the Third Reich, it was " Suitable for such roles as naval co-operation, maritime patrol and torpedo-bombing, the He-59 was designed for operation with either wheel or float undercarriages,..." The He-59 was originally designed in 1930, being one of the early clandestine commericial/military aircraft of the break-out aircraft industry. First flown in 1931, only a hand full of He-59s were produced by Heinkel , series production being taken over by Arado. Production was phased out in 1938, with 140 having been built by Arado.

This aircraft saw considerable combat during the Spanish Civil war, where it was dubbed with the nick-name, "big shoes" because of the large floats. Flown by Condor Legion and Spanish pilots, it's primary job was to blocade Republican held ports. As could be expected in the whirl-wind arms development race that would become WW II, the operational combat role of a relatively slow bi-wing floatplane was very limited.

This model continues in the tradition of earlier Special Hobby models. Good, reliable recessed panel lines, not soft, but not crisp detail either, and slightly heavy part injection gates. Nice fabric urface detail is present, however the plastic has a strange light texture to the piece surfaces, and probably could use a light sanding / polishing before painting. Vacuform clear parts are provided, and as such will require above average attention to preperation detail. The resin parts if anything have been getting better and better recently in the Special Hobby line, and this kit is no exception. Very fine and petite detail is presented., which is good given the open cockpit and gunner's positions. This kit is buildable only as the pontoon equipted bird. Two markings are provided for, a Condor Legion aircraft in overall RLM 02, and a nice navalized RLM, 65, 71, 72 and 73 paint scheme bird.

Over all, this is a pretty good kit, and looks to be a unique addition to those who like aircraft that float.

This kit fills an important gap. It shouldn't require too much work to turn out an excellent replica.
